The day that my kid beat me at my own game.

<span class=

Did you ever play Opposite Day when you were a kid? Just in case you grew up under a rock and don't know what I'm talking about, here is the definition from The Urban Dictionary.

Opposite Day:
"Rooted in playground tradition.
A fictional holiday, in which everything you do
or say means exactly the opposite.
Often used at the end of a sentence
to negate what you just said."

Get the idea? Okay...moving on. I was the master of Opposite Day when I was a kid. Priding myself in the fact that I could always confuse my Grandma who really had her wits about her. She was still an easy target as I would randomly declare the holiday then proceed to prance around her and flex my brain, saying the exact opposite of what I meant. We could go on for hours, me talking smack and her getting all flustered as the day wore on. It was great.

Well, the other day, Karma came into my home, plopped down on the couch, and laughed her ass off at me. Here is a conversation that I had with Griffin.

G: It's Opposite Day.

Me
: That's cool. (Trying to act all casual but really I'm excited on the inside
because he has no idea who he's dealing with).

G
: I need a snack, please.

Me
: So, you're not hungry then?

G
: No.

Me
: So, you don't want a snack?

G
: Yes

Me
: (Getting flummoxed) Hmmm...so you're telling me that you want a snack?

G
:No

Me
: Okay, time out...I'm going to the kitchen, am I getting you a snack?

G
: No

Me
: Is it still Opposite Day?

G
: Yes

Me: Okay...that means that it is not Opposite day at this moment?
So, this whole snack thing...did you really want one?

G
: No

At which point I just walked away, went into the bathroom, closed the door, took a good long look in the mirror, and said to myself: "You're losing your edge, Leigh!"

Please scroll down to play Freakshow Friday.

I liked your exchange. I could sense your frustration. ha! And I can't help but wonder whether he got his snack.

You're clearly raising a smart kid. He might be too smart for your own good though :)

You totally should have just started repeating everything he said just to mess with him. Because changing the rules? Is a mommy's prerogative.

He is a smart one but don't you hate when they one-up you?

Sadly my boys have grown out of opposite day. I will have to teach my grandchildren when they get older.

That is a smart one you have there!

I was once told - kids spend their whole lives trying to get one over on their parents, where parents have other things to do than trying to stay one step ahead.

Oh man.

I had to smack myself upside the head to uncross my eyeballs whilst trying to decipher that conversation.

Also, Dear God, please don't let my two girls discover Opposite Day else I will be forced to learn to drink. Amen.

I would not be good at this game... but willing to try!

My daughter recently discovered opposite day and I realized that for some reason this game is much more fun when you are the kid!

My 4-year old confuses me all the time with opposite day. I blame sleep deprivation!

I think my kids are stuck in some "Groundhog Day" version of opposite day. Everything they say is smack, and they NEVER make sense.
Then again, welcome to the teens.

hahaha!! I still play opposite day, except I turn it around on my son when he's all "Why didn't you get me a snack, you said you would." and I'm all "It's opposite day dude."

(Opposite Day Comment)
My kids never get the best of me.
I am never frustrated with my kids and always know what they want.
My kids are not smarter than me.
I am in control of my parenting stress and do not eat chocolate all day long.
Your blog annoys me.

yes - Opposite Day is a favourite around here as well! I think they enjoy being able to say "I don't love you mommy" and get away with it.

LOL! That is priceless! My daughter tries to play opposite day with me all the time. She cheats and changes the rules though.

Ah...the old, "1, 2, paradox approach." I know it well.

I am really thankful that I can still out-wit my girls. Of course, they're only 6 and 3...

Raoulysgirl said...

So...did he get a snack or not?

Don't you just love kids?

Aleta said...

LMAO. I think it's only "opposite" day when it doesn't have anything to do with snacks. Hehe. Never did opposite day with my family :)

I've been scrolling through your blog and it's hilarious. Just had to leave you a comment. I sure wish I could come up with a good caption for that chain mail prom photo, but I got nothing. But thank you very much, it's an image that will probably be in my head now for the rest of the day.
