Roadmap to my Youth :: Jane's Addiction

Listen to remember...

I don't remember the first time that I heard Jane's Addiction
and I think think that it's because they
just integrated into my life with such ease.

Something about Perry Farrel's voice
got under my skin and never left.
When I hear the song Summertime Rolls
my head gets dreamy and I almost want to cry.

I can just see myself sitting on the hood of my car
in some deserted parking lot with my high school friends.
Blasting this song out the windows
and howling at the stars.
We would be doing all kinds of things
that our loving mothers warned us not to do.

I can almost feel the humid Texas air sticking to my skin
and feeling like I was unstoppable.
The summer was in full swing.
Perry would moan the lyrics...
"Screaming tag, you are the one"
and my heart would ache to find someone to call "the one".

The night would be brimming with possibility.
What would happen next?
We always found trouble
and when we did
Jane's Addiction was usually playing on the stereo.

My personal fave:
"Jane says she's goin' away to Spain when she gets my money saved. I'm gonna start tomorrow!"

Ahhhhh! Janes Addiction. How could I forget? I think we are around the same age so I was also in HS when they were becoming famous. You know, my husband also really likes Janes Addiction. They were very popular in Spain and Venezuela when he was growing up. Amazing how globally popular they became.

I really enjoyed this post..it made me think of the songs that take me back to a less complicated time....

I saw them in concert back in 90-something. A Chicago radio station was doing a large Christmas concert with 8 bands, and Jane's Addiction was one of them. Great show.

That song slays me. I can't believe I haven't heard it in years. I guess that's what happens when all your favorite albums from high school are on dubbed casette tapes stashed in the bonus room.

Anyway, thanks for the transcendent moment during baby naptime.

I am truly old because, while I have heard of Jane's Addiction, I have nary a memory linked to them.
