The end of an era.

Three days ago, I offered Koen a moment to nurse.
He snuggled up in my lap, turned his head,
took one look at me and said "no."
He then scooted off of my lap and
ran off to play and hasn't asked for it since.

Just like that, it's over.

I've had my suspicions that we were almost done
but when I heard him say "no" with such resolve,
I felt a twinge of sadness as he engaged himself
in a toy and didn't even look back.
It was organic and easy for him.

That is a blessing.

Yet, for me, the mama
who has breasts that still hold milk,
I feel a bit listless and full.
It has been 17 months of feedings
and my day feels a bit empty.
My lap feels empty.

My heart aches a bit to feel
that closeness with my baby.
Luckily, it's been a gradual weaning so I am not uncomfortable.
I think that I will avoid engorgement.

I'm just a bit lonely for my baby to curl into me.
I will always cherish our bond and
remember his sweet hand rubbing my neck as he nursed.
I will forever hold onto the loving gaze that my met mine
during those early morning feedings.
Perhaps this sadness comes from knowing that
he is my last baby and that my nursing days are over?
It's bittersweet to feel the freedom settling in
but I would trade it for one more feeding so I that I could say goodbye.
Goodbye to my sweet baby's need for me to nourish him.

To all you nursing moms out there,
cherish it. Before you know it it will be over
and you will be where I am at today...

I am letting go,
I am shedding tears,
I am watching my baby grow
right before my eyes.

Speaking of engorgement, scroll on down to play Freakshow Friday.

You Capture :: Signs

The assignment at You Capture was signs.
I went a bit abstract on this one.
The other day as I drove through my neighborhood
I saw this amazing hornets' nest nestled in a tree on the side of the road.
I was enchanted by the little home
and decided to try and capture it.

So, once again, I risked
life and limb to photograph this fantastic nest.
As I clicked away I felt brave and braver...
taking a step closer and before I knew it, I was a little too close.
I noticed one worker hornet buzzing around my head
then another
and another.
Then all three flew into the nest.

I imagined that the Queen had sent them on a mission
to check me out and they were heading back in
to tell her to send out the troops.
If you look closely at the opening
you will see one single hornet peering out at me.
I took those buzzing hornets as a sign,

a sign to run away.

The tale of a young fisherman.

I come from a long line of fishermen,
and women who fish as well.
My mom, dad, grandparents, and brother
have spent many days on the water.

Even though I'm not the fishing type,
the family history still moves me somehow.
So, when Griffin said that he wanted
to go fishing with his Poppy

we all felt a burst of pride.

On Labor day we all packed up
and headed to the "big pond"
so he could dip a pole in the water.

It was a big deal.

Photobucket

There was a hunt for grasshoppers,

Photobucket

a quick lesson from one generation to the next,

Photobucket

and a new fisherman was born.

Photobucket

We hopped in the boat in search of Griffin's first fish.

Photobucket

I sat on the front of the boat beneath a big floppy hat

Photobucket

and quietly (as to not disturb the fish)
dipped my toes in the water as we waited and waited.

The fish weren't biting and Griffin announced
"I am not going to give up."
He held that fishing pole with hopeful hands.

Photobucket

Finally, Roger caught a tiny fish.
Griffin became even more determined
and begged to go around the pond a few more times.

"My fish is out there"

he would say as he reeled
in empty hook after hook.

Photobucket

When it was time to go,
he cried because he wanted to try again.
I think that he would have stayed out there all night.

They are going back this Saturday.
Griffin has a score to settle with the pond.
