I read your article, and thought it was great.
I was appalled at the nasty comments people left. I am not sure why people get so defensive??
I personally made a HUGE mistake with my first child...we let her sleep in our room (in her crib) until she was 14 months old. She refused to sleep this whole time, and when I would jump out of bed 4/5 times a night to feed/rock/soothe her, it made her worse!! I didn't understand her needs, and she refused to lay in or bed it aggrevated her! Then finally at 14 mos (2nd baby was 3 mos.) we were sleep deprived and crazy, so we had to let her cry it out, which is exactly what she needed, she slept like a rock from then on. And the 2nd baby slept through the night from 4 months in his own bed....
Neither of my kids would entertain the notion of co-sleeping, so I understand NOW (that I am sane, and get sleep) that you have to listen to a particular baby's needs!!
Good job recognizing that early enough (for both) and finding a system that allows everyone a good night's sleep!!

Great article! Both my kids are the ones that want their own space. We co-slept with each of them when they were little. But by 3 months, they both needed their own space. I love that they sleep through the night so easily. Although I do love to cuddle!!

Great article but I can't imagine cosleeping on a full time basis. I need my space.
I work nights and usually slept alone during the day so no one was around to cosleep, however after I would go to work at night my youngest would sneak in and sleep with my husband...It worked fine and eventually we told her it had to stop and by then she was ok with it.

Just because it isn't my "thing" I can't fault someone for their own methods. What works for one family may not work for another.. and disagreeing or not isn't the point, it isn't mine or anyones place to judge.

Wonderful article, and wonderful response to the negative nellies who commented! ;-) (At least the first ones I saw, because that riled me too much to read more of them!) :-D I *love* that you said it's all about what the *child* needs, not what the mama wants!! Yay!

I read it; great job! Now in my house, my 1st born slept in his swing until 9 months and he was so heavy it wouldn't swing anymore. Now my new little daughter, sleeps in her crib just fine. And she looks so darn cute in there too!

I love that post. I sleep with my daughter because I have to right now. She is a koala kid, however, I woulld prefer that she was not. She is a tosser and turner, oh and a kicker, screamer and hitter. Makes for a sleep deprived momma!

Wonderful article, Leigh!

I am not a co-sleeper. I don't know if it's because I had twins or if it was because of me/my babies. I selfishly love co-sleeping with my husband and confess that often our king-sized bed doesn't feel big enough for two of us---can't imagine throwing two more kids in there!

Whatever works. Everyone is different. I just know I need my rest and I can't get it sharing a bed with my kiddos! We get plenty of snuggle time during the day to make up for it.

I loved your article, from the Kangaroo pouch all the way down to the second baby not sleeping like the first baby.

My oldest son used to make the letter H with my husban and I. The second one walked up and down your back all night long. The 3rd one plastered himself against you and sweated. The 4th one just tries to snuggle as close as possible while the 5th one is an arm flinger. No, they didn't all sleep all the time. They just wandered in during the middle of the night until they were about 12 years old when they would wonder in and pull a blanket on the floor just to be close. But, you know, they don't do that at 13 or 23. It doesn't last forever. So people should just get over it and do what you think best - this is America after all!

By the way, I recommend the following book by Margaret Wise Brown - she is one of my very favorite children's authors but I don't think this book gets much recognition. It's a great mom-son read along:

I enjoyed your article, "Co-sleepless Nights." It sure brought back lots of memories of my sleepless nights. I guess that's why they say having children is for the young !!
