Something pretty amazing happened over the summer...
Griffin learned how to read.
He was just a little behind after graduating from Kindergarten
so my parents tutored him.
We called it Nana and Poppy school
and we are so blessed
that my mom is a Professor of Reading Education
and my dad is a retired elementary school teacher.
They worked so hard with him
and now he can read like a champ.
He worked hard to learn how to
print more clearly as well.
We decided to have a party to celebrate.

We gathered up all his favorite junk foods
cupcakes, potato chips, and chocolate chip cookies.
Then we had a super fun pig out fest in his honor.

As part of the ceremony,
he read a book to my father.
We were all so proud as he sounded
out every single word perfectly.

out every single word perfectly.
I could feel his confidence building as he read each word.
We gave him presents to say
congratulations for being a reader.
Then, he gave my parents presents
to say thank you for being such great teachers.
Getting that child to focus
when all he wanted to do was play
was a huge task, I know.
They stuck with him though
and for that I am so appreciative.

Fantastic. I hope he also discovered that absolute joy of reading.

Ah, the gift of reading is the gift that keeps on giving!
Also, kids who learn to read well and early simply do better in school. Great that by end of summer Griffin came away with something so valuable.
That is awesome! Way to go Griffin.
My mom taught my kids to read, too, before they even started school. Aren't grandparents wonderful?
Congratulations to Griffin!
=)
Congratulations, now that he can read his world will be even bigger.
You go, Griffin! And Nana and Poppy, you rule! Nice going, Mom. You all worked together and earned a great accomplishment.

Your parents are the best, Leigh. The best. And I'm sure you know that.
p.s. Uhm..I would like to be invited over next time because all of Griffin's favorite junk foods are MY favorite junk foods.
Good job Griffin :) What a neat party!
Wow! What a happy and inspiring capture! It is nice to see grandparents and parents helping their children to learn such an important skill (I used to be an ESOL teacher and actually wrote a little bit about that for my You Capture post). Being literate is so important to living in this world.
