52 Weeks of Happiness :: Week 19

Photobucket

Owning my grandmother's antiques.

I inherited my grandma's antiques
when she passed away 6 years ago.
I love seeing her china cabinet in my dining room
or admiring her lovely buffet in my kitchen.

Other treasures that graced her home
now grace mine.

What I treasure the most is the way
that my house smells
like my Mammaw's home.

No one else can smell it but me.

When I walk in the
front door of my home,

the scent that I smelled all
throughout childhood fills my senses.

Photobucket

French fries frying on the stove,
hushpuppies popping in oil in a skillet,

the smell of the many meals that
she prepared can still
be smelled on her old antiques.

Photobucket

I love that I have this
unexpected gift in my home.
I love that the memories
of all of those meals made with care
linger here.

I am supposed to inherit my aunt's china cabinet, and have long dreaded the logistics of such a gift. Your post is making me see things differently today :)

Lovely...I treasure the same small details like the smell that can take me back 20-30 years. Nice post, enjoyed it. Oh, and the furniture is beautiful too ;)

It's refreshing to read about the love and memories antiques can bring. Passing down memories is a time honored tradition in my family, too. Especially refreshing in our "modern" times when many younger folks get rid of the antiques from older generation. Thanks for posting this!

I love antiques so I know how you feel. My mom has collected a number of pieces over the years..>I have just a couple but would love to have more. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't have the same appreciation.

OH I love the pieces. I have my memaws table and chairs in my garage. Too small for a family of 5. I miss the smells of my Memaw's kitchen and do my best to recreate them in my own, but regardless of how I try I can't quite get it just right.

Beautiful antiques! My Grandparents either didn't have any antique furniture to hand down or they got rid of to "upgrade" throughout the years. You are very lucky to have those memories and the furniture to hand down to your kids one day.

The antiques are beautiful! items like that always give me such wonderful feelings and spur my imagination. I so wish they could talk and share the stories of their lives... how wonderful!
