A Working Mom's Dilemma


A Professor is under fire for taking her sick daughter to work
and nursing her while giving a lecture.
Do you think this mom did the right thing?
Should she be chastised for her behavior?

Boy what a fascinating article, Leigh. It's hard to believe that a professor who is teaching a class on "sex, gender, and culture", from an anthropology perspective would be so set upon by feminist students! A good opportunity for them to reflect on their own expectations for academic culture.

Very interesting article -- it's a really thorny situation. Having been a college professor for many years, I understand how important it is to be thee on the first day. On the other hand, I don't usually do a whole class on the first day -- I give them the necessary info, talk about the syllabus, and let them go buy their books. I agree that the child/breastfeeding would have been distracting, but I've accommodated single mothers bringing their children to my class and I'm sure she was discreet. I totally agree with Linda that there's a bit of heavy irony in the topic of the class . . .
