When you stumble upon a fellow witch...

Have you ever read a book and felt like
you could very easily be friends with the author?
Not in a scary stalker way
 but more in a
"we're the same type of gal" way.

That happened to me as I read
The Witch of Little Italy.
I loved the book so much
that I hopped on Facebook and let the author,
Suzanne Palmieri,
know just how awesome I think she is.

I never expected to get a response
but low and behold
look what unfolded...

I absolutely love it when an author
is so human and accessible!

So, go read her book!
Be sure to have a box of tissues handy
when you do.

Then go tell her how much you loved her story.
You may even find that you
are a lost witch too!

Throwback Thursday :: The day that my grandma taught me the art of creating a memory with a ridiculous amount of shoes.

I'm starting a new series here
called Throwback Thursday.

I have many new readers
and as a little gift to them,
I'll be posting my favorite past posts
that they may have missed.

If you're a long time reader,
I hope that you enjoy this walk
down memory lane.

Lately I've been gathering memories of my grandmother who passed away in 2004. She was a pistol and taught me many life lessons that serve me to this day in my adult life. One day in particular has been swirling around in my heart. It was the end of summer in 1989 and I was spending an afternoon with Mammaw doing some back to school clothes shopping. At the time, Keds were popular and I just had to have a pair to add to my fall wardrobe. I remember heading into the shoe department at JcPenny's and standing before the mirror with crisp white Keds hugging my feet. I looked at Mammaw with hopeful eyes as she smiled and said "Well, I think we just have to buy those."

As we walked down the mall together she pulled me into another shoe store and said "I wonder if they have those Keds in red?" We waltzed in, found them, and walked out of the store with another pair of shoes. I felt so spoiled as we walked down the mall arm and arm with my two bags in tow."You know what?" Mammaw said as we walked into Dillard's (which was just a few doors down from the other shoe store) "I think that you need those shoes in yellow too."

I followed her into the shoe department as she asked the saleswoman to grab me a pair of yellow Keds to try on. Those yellow shoes had not been on my feet for thirty seconds when she told the lady to grab us a pair of orange ones too. To my amazement, she bought me both pairs. It was unheard of to buy four pairs of shoes in one day and I remember feeling so special. It didn't stop there either. We walked up the mall and stopped in every shoe store that carried Keds. We found green, blue, black, pink, baby blue, and purple Keds. She ended up buying me ten pairs of shoes that day.

I remember feeling overwhelmed and beyond happy that she had spoiled me so. I had asked her to stop as she paid for pair number five but she insisted that we keep on shopping until I owned a pair of Keds in every color. She told me that she wasn't just buying me shoes but that she was creating a memory. I was only fourteen at the time and didn't really see the significance other than the fact that I now had an awesome pair of shoes to match any outfit that I wanted to wear to school.

Now, as an adult, I look back on that lucky afternoon and smile. I may no longer own all those Keds in every color but I do own the memory. She taught me so much that day. Sometimes it's nice to go out of your way to do something out of the ordinary for the people that you love. Choose something so indulgent and special that the excitement settles in both of your hearts forever. I have many memories of my fun times with Mammaw that are not quite as exorbitant but this one stands out the in my mind often.

I remember when we drove away from the mall that the backseat was filled high with all the bags of new shoes. I gave her a kiss on the cheek and thanked her for being so generous. She patted my knee and said "I hope that you'll think about this when you're an adult and remember how special you are." Well, it was not lost on me after all because I look back on that shopping excursion and feel her love to this day. I hope to create many outrageous memories for my children and grandchildren. Her love and excitement for life will live on with every ridiculous memory that we create.

The Day the Roses Bloom

Just outside my kitchen window,
there is a rose bush that the previous owners
left on the back deck when we moved here.

I pretty much ignore it and forget about it
until one day I look out the window
while I'm loading the dishwasher
and see the most beautiful roses blooming
despite the fact that it is totally negelected.

The day that the roses bloom is
always a shock to me
but I'm always so happy to see them
stretching and yawning awake.

It's adds a little cheer to my chores
in the kitchen.

Thank God for flowers
that aren't dependent on me to stay alive.
I have a black thumb,
the thumb of death.

Here's the sunflowers
sitting on my old dirty windowsill
that I was determined to nurture.

Yup, they're dead.
Sorry little Sunflowers
but it's kind of your fault
for not being roses.

The Happiness Project :: Week 8

Koen's class had a special daddy day.
Roger took the morning off from work
and grabbed some hammers (real and pretend)
to have some fun creating a sculpture with his little guy.

I sent the camera with him
and told him that he had to photograph
the experience so I could see it.

From the look on Koen's face
I think that he was pretty proud
of the turtle sculpture that they constructed.

I love that Roger took
the time out of his busy schedule
to do this with our boy.

Their piece is displayed
 in a place of honor
in Koen's room.

The Stay at Home Mom Chronicles : The sound of a magic marker drawing.

My days around here seem to run together.
Ordinary moments unfold around me daily
and I need to stop and relish in them.

One day, my boys will be out living life
and I will miss these everyday experiences.

So, I am taking the time to document
the simple moments that pass between us.
I'm calling this little collection of memories...

Since becoming a mom,
I have gained the uncanny ability to
hear a magic marker drawing from anywhere in the house.

I could be way back in the laundry room
and I swear that I'll hear
a lid being popped off
and the drawing begin.

I always pray that it's drawing on paper.

Most of the time, I rush across the house
to discover that the kids
are indeed drawing on paper as they should.

But every once in a while,
I 'll catch them in the act
of abusing their magic marker privileges
and scribbling on themselves.

It's both infuriating and adorable.
I scold them to high heaven
when I catch them doing it.

I secretly love to see them
covered head to toe with
the bright brilliant marks on their little bodies.

They must feel so creative and free.
I often send Koen to school
with faint drawings left on him
because I couldn't scrub it off completely.

His teacher always laughs a bit when she sees it.

I know that I will look back
on these moments
when I dart across the house
to put a stop to the magic marker shenanigans
 with a smile.

I love our crazy little life together.

Once Upon a Time Mommy was Funny...

 photo 4f680507-cc4a-4e33-9d09-e70d2bdca75f_zps0497defb.jpg

I was recently cleaning out my closet when I came upon this silly little award (a Genie lamp that you shake and it tells your fortune) that I received in high school when I was voted wittiest of my graduating class. I remember that it was bestowed upon me at our senior Prom, which was an Arabian Nights Theme.

I didn't mean to save it but my beloved father, who is known for pilfering through the trash, saved remnants of my adolescent years and gave them back to me in a box on my 21st birthday. (Also included in said box were forged sick notes and bad progress reports-thanks dad).

Anyhoos...I found this dinky award the other day and my children grabbed it right up and started playing with it. "Why do have this, mama?" Koen asked while shaking it feverishly. I then told them the story about how all the kids at my school voted and said that I was the funniest person in our class.

They couldn't believe it. I think that they were impressed because now they ask me to tell the story of how I was the only person who campaigned during the voting process. I stood by the ballot box and bribed people with Oreo cookies and it totally worked!

Let me just say that I've never won anything in my life except for honorable mention in the softball throw in the 3rd garde, 4th place in a poetry contest in the 10th grade, and 1st place in a dance contest at a bar in Atlanta when I was 28 years old. That's it. Needless to say, winning that stupid award was a high point in my life.

So, it makes me happy to see my boys grabbing my esteemed award (that I forgot that I still had) and asking Aladdin their future. They ask all kinds of questions ranging from "Will we get McDonalds for dinner?" to "Will I be famous when I grow up?" Their little faces light up as they wait for the answer and I can't help but think back to the night that I won the award. I was so young and unsure of what my future would hold. Little did I know that these two silly and wonderful little boys would be in my life.

I like that I have hard evidence to show my children that I was a person before I had them. I like that they can hold that award and know that their mom was officially the funniest person in the room at one point in her life.

It's the little things, people!

The Excitement of Book Orders

One of the best parts of being a kid
is coming home from school
with Scholastic book orders.

Griffin just loves sitting down
and looking for books
that he wants to order.

He actually sits in one place
for an extended amount of time
and gets completely engrossed
in the search.

He circles the books that he wants
and then we sit together
and talk about all the books
and then he narrows down
his decision.

He feels so big when
he gets to be the one to fill out the order form.

I get a kick out of sitting down
after he goes to bed and
scanning the pages for all the books
that he took the time to circle.

I love that he has a love for reading.
I love that it's such an even in our home
to pour over the book order
and imagine all the possibilities of each story.

The hopeful little circles that he draws
will forever be a memory
of his childhood for me.
