52 Weeks of Happiness :: Week 24

DSC_0003

We've had this storage unit for 5 years
full of stuff that we never ever use or see.
It's been like a graveyard for forgotten items
and a bit of a mental and financial drain for us.

We decided to rummage through
all our dusty stuff and clear it out.

It was like a time capsule,
filled with boxes that had
been stuffed so long ago.

It was emotional to encounter
little baby toys that weren't needed anymore.

We decided to donate almost
everything we touched to charity.

It was time to say goodbye.

So, I photographed the super special stuff.
Like, my awesome Kung Fu purse
that I used when Roger and I first started dating.

Oh, the sass I had back then
as I karate chopped
anyone who remarked on my bag.

Or the fancy outfit I wore
when I won a dance contest at an Atlanta bar
so very long ago.

My stage name was Lil' Magic
and I danced to Neil Diamond's song America.
I wore a tiny Uncle Sam hat on my head
and pranced around with sparklers.

To remember that crazy girl covered in sequence
made me smile and shake my hips a bit.

We drove 4 carloads of our beloved stuff
over to Goodwill and didn't look back.
Hopefully, someone will love our stuff
as much as we did, once upon a time.

It felt so good to purge our stuff
and say goodbye to the past that
we were holding onto.

We are just too busy enjoying our life now
and it was time
to truly live in the present.

Our souls feel unburdened.

We have a HUGE garage, that my husband would like to one day use to ya know work on cars.. when we get our past purged. Except it is not just our stuff in there. The family has used it as well, to not have to pay storage fees.. Now if I could just get them to purge as well.

Storage sheds are so fun to go through, but at the end of the day it is so nice to just pare down and get rid of stuff you'll never use again. Nice, but as you realized- a little sad too. It looks like you guys did an amazing job clearing that out!

I love the look of that empty space so much and I bet it feels good for you to see that too!

Good for you!!!! It does feel so good to purge things. We did this about a year ago when we moved all our things out of storage & had to make room in the garage. Then this month I just spent a day or two a week going through the closets & making a pile in the garage. I was pretty proud of myself when the hubs had to use both the back of the van & the back seat to fit all the donation stuff in it. I think I pulled 4 trash bags of clothes just from the girl's closet alone. It feels fabulous to clear it out doesn't it??!!

Hey Leigh, Linked for the very first time today. Feeling quite happy :)

I used to hoard a lot of things, then one day ,like you, I understood that it's better that others use them than it getting spoiled. Feels really good doesn't it?:)

We learned our lesson of storing to much stuff the hard way. Our storage locker was broken into years ago and with it went childhood, high school, and college memories. We even lost our Christmas Tree and decorations. Now, we have motto if we're not using it and it doesn't fit on your storage shelves in the garage - we're not keeping it!

It's always good to simplify. Kind of freeing, right?

That is so amazing. I really need to purge. We don't have a storage unit but just too much junk in the house.

good writing, great story telling, great humor, great photography.

I love that y'all got rid of everything and didn't look back. Sometimes that's the best thing to do! It keeps things simple.
